It’s been a year since Liam Cooper left Leeds United, and after a left-field career switch to CSKA Sofia, a return to the north of England could be on the cards.
Since Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League in 2023, so much has changed in Daniel Farke’s squad with plenty of the mainstays moving onto pastures new.
Close friends and promotion icons Luke Ayling, Stuart Dallas and Liam Cooper all departed during 2024, with the former club captain heading out to Bulgaria for a short stint with CSKA Sofia.

Ex-Leeds United hero Liam Cooper on Sheffield Wednesday shortlist after CSKA Sofia release
Cooper’s stint in Bulgaria lasted less than a year, seeing his contract terminated by mutual consent, paving the way for a potential return back to the UK.
The 33-year-old may still have something to offer at Championship level a year on from contributing to Leeds’ 90-point campaign that agonisingly missed out on promotion under Farke.

The Star now report that Sheffield Wednesday, amidst ongoing well-documented ownership turmoil that ensures the Owls can only bring in free agents or loans, are working through a 60-man shortlist of targets after their opening day defeat to Leicester City.
Amongst those is claimed to be Cooper, as the Star relay ‘reports’ of interest in the Scotland international, alongside former Brentford and Burnley man Ben Mee.
Wednesday’s transfer embargo was lifted last week, while their financial issues brought a fee restriction that remains in place, but the South Yorkshire side are expected to be press on with new recruits soon, which could include the man who made 284 appearances for United.
Liam Cooper would be a very good signing for Sheffield Wednesday
At this stage, I’m sure Wednesdayites would take anyone with any sort of Championship experience in their squad to add to what they’ve got.
As Bilal El Khannouss impressed for the Foxes, the Owls’ squad was threadbare to say the least on Sunday and needs experience.
Cooper has vast experience at both ends of the Championship table and would therefore be a solid signing for Wednesday in their current position.
