Late attempt from Sunderland to ‘immediately sign’ player – Last minute offer from Black Cats

Sunderland have made a concrete attempt to sign Valencia’s César Tárrega this summer.

That’s at least what Plaza Deportiva, an outlet local to the Spanish club, are reporting, and they discuss Sunderland’s failed attempt to sign him.

Two days ago, Tárrega committed his long-term future to the La Liga club by signing a new contract until 2030.

According to the report, Sunderland showed keen interest to snatch the centre-back from Los Ches’ clutches.

It’s claimed the Black Cats and AS Roma wanted to ‘immediately sign’ the 23-year-old. The Serie A side made contact to ask about the Spaniard before deciding not to go ahead further.

The Premier League newcomers made a ‘last minute offer’ of over €20m to the Spanish club, and it was turned down by both Valencia and Tárrega. This was done right before he extended the contract.

Sunderland aren’t the only English club to have looked at the defender this summer. On July 18th, we covered claims from Spain that Newcastle showed interest but didn’t make advances.

Newcastle and Sunderland are set to sign AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw and Getafe’s Omar Alderete respectively to improve their defence.
