West Ham ready to take gamble on “top striker” with just 17 Premier League goals in last 4…

Goals were a real headache for West Ham last season.

With just 46 Premier League goals — one of the lowest tallies outside the relegation zone — the Hammers were desperately short in attack.

Add to that the loss of Mohamed Kudus, who managed a modest four goals last year but was still a key spark, now with Spurs, and the departure of club legend Michail Antonio, West Ham’s all-time Premier League top scorer, and you’ve got a big, gaping hole to fill.

Callum Wilson’s arrival brought some Premier League pedigree—88 goals under his belt and all—but with Wilson’s age creeping up and his injury record, it’s clear West Ham can’t put all their eggs in one basket.

Graham Potter knows this, and apparently, he has a plan.

Caught Offside reports that West Ham are one of a handful of clubs circling Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the free agent striker who parted ways with Everton this summer.

Man United have shown interest, seeing him as a reliable rotation option, and Newcastle have dipped their toes in the water but reportedly hit a snag over wages. Sunderland are also in the mix.

But Caught Offside claims it’s the Hammers who have shown the most interest, indicating that they could be “willing to take a calculated gamble to bring him in.”

And make no mistake — this is a big gamble.

Once considered one of the Premier League’s sharpest finishers (Carlo Ancelotti once called him a “top striker”), Calvert-Lewin’s star has dimmed. In the last four seasons, he’s managed just 17 Premier League goals — a shocking drop off for a player once feared by defenders. Last term? A meagre three goals in 26 appearances.

His ongoing injury issues, combined with a reported £100,000-per-week wage demand, have made many clubs hesitant to pull the trigger.

But if West Ham can get anywhere near the player who netted 21 times across all competitions back in 2020/21, it could be a game-changer. Still, this feels more like a hope than a guarantee — a bold bet from Potter and the board.
