Tom Brady spent most of his historic NFL career playing for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. So he knows what kind of coach UNC is getting in the 73-year-old.
“What they’re going to get is obviously the most prepared, the most hard working coach that I’ve ever been around,” Brady said during his appearance on “The Joel Klatt Show.” “If you go to that school, you will be prepared to play at the next level. He’s going to teach you the right fundamentals, the right techniques. He’s going to have a high expectation for you, and you’re going to develop a lot. That’s what I know.”
Brady, 199th overall pick by the Patriots in 2000, became arguably the NFL’s greatest quarterback over the course of his 20 years in New England under Belichick. Brady helped lead the franchise to six Super Bowl titles and holds many team and league records.
But Belichick has never coached at the college level before. And while he was able to strike gold many times in the NFL — including eight Super Bowl wins — Brady sees one thing in particular that will challenge his former coach.
“I think the challenge for him is he’s dealing with a lot of probably underdeveloped players because he’s dealt with guys that are four, five, six years further along than what he’s normally had to deal with,” Brady said. “So I think there’s probably a learning curve for him. This is just me hypothesizing. I don’t have much knowledge of it, but I’m sure it’s different coaching a 17 or 18-year-old than even a 22 or 23-year-old.”
The Tar Heels and Belichick will begin a new era this fall. It’s unclear how UNC will perform in its first year with a new coach, but the 2025 ACC preseason poll has the Tar Heels finishing at No. 8. They finished 13th in the ACC last season with a 6-7 overall record.
