Crystal Palace may have shot themselves in the foot in the transfer market this summer.
Both clubs have been turned away, despite the 25-year-old’s apparent willingness to move on from Selhurst Park.
Now, Palace chairman Steve Parish has admitted that both Guehi and the club “need a conclusion” to this transfer saga. But his confession comes far too late in the day for anything to change.
Parish said: “We had one bid last summer but Joachim Andersen went to Fulham and we couldn’t afford to lose both of them. We then had another bid in January but that was a difficult situation, and the player had a point of view on that one.
“So we just have to see what happens but it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.”
Holding onto Guehi has paid dividends for Palace, who won the FA Cup last season and at the weekend beat Liverpool to the Community Shield.
But in doing so, the English centre-back picked up an injury against the Reds, forcing him off the pitch prematurely.
Guehi seems to prefer a move to Liverpool, but Parish admitting that his situation needs to be resolved with just a few weeks left in the transfer window does not leave much time to negotiate a deal.
Even so, with less than 12 months left on his contract, Liverpool and Newcastle United might as well wait it out and offer him a home once he becomes a free agent next summer.
Palace could have cashed out around £70m for Guehi - now, he could end up walking without a penny landing in their pockets.
