Former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook is reportedly close to joining the Sacramento Kings, per ESPN’s TimMacMahon. The 37-year-old veteran would back up Dennis Schröder, bringing scoring and leadership to a retooled backcourt after the Kings traded De’Aaron Fox to the Spurs.
The Sacramento Kings appear poised to make a major backcourt addition, with former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook now viewed as the most likely signing destination.

According to ESPN’s TimMacMahon, “League sources consider the Sacramento Kings the most likely destination for Westbrook, who will turn 37 during the first month of the season.”
The Kings' interest in Westbrook was first reported by local insider Carmichael Dave.
If the move materializes, the nine-time All-Star would likely come off the bench, sharing ball-handling duties with new free-agent addition Dennis Schroder.
Westbrook is coming off a turbulent season with the Denver Nuggets, where he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game. Despite his age, the Kings see him as a potential spark plug and secondary scoring threat alongside Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan.
Sacramento’s interest follows the trade of star point guard De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs, leaving the team in search of veteran playmaking depth. Should the deal go through, Westbrook would join his sixth NBA team in just seven seasons, further extending a storied career bound for the Hall of Fame.
