Talks coming soon: Liverpool step up their efforts to sign “absolute gem” – journalist

**Liverpool are expected to hold fresh talks with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi later this week, reliable journalist Lewis Steele has claimed.**

The 25-year-old got the better of the Reds on Sunday afternoon, helping Palace win the Community Shield after a penalty shootout triumph.

Liverpool badly need a new centre-back this summer, and Guehi has arguably been mentioned more than any other defender when it comes to potential signings.

Now, Steele has taken to [_X_](https://x.com/LewisSteele_/status/1954769750258864396) to share Palace chairman Steve Parish’s quotes on the England international, adding an update about upcoming talks, too:

_“Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish asked in MZ yday about interest in Marc Guehi and whether he would sell if the price is right: ‘Yes. Of course, for players of that calibre to leave on a free, it is a problem.’_

_“Liverpool remain keen and set to hold further talks this week. They don’t want to overpay for a player out of contract soon, though.“_

**Guehi an excellent option for Liverpool**

-------------------------------------------

Guehi showed in the Community Shield why he could be such a strong signing for Liverpool, with the Eagles captain generally keeping their attack quiet as the minutes ticked by.

He has all the tools to add depth and quality to a vital area of the Reds’ squad, coming in as great competition for Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, having been lauded by [Michael Beale](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11096/13159981/marc-guehi-the-rise-of-englands-absolute-gem-euro-2024-defender):

_“He shows a huge amount of confidence to play on the left side and his technical upbringing from Chelsea means he can use his left foot, albeit he is dominant on his right foot. When you see the teams line up, he’s not the biggest centre-back but he has a huge leap. Quietly people are realising we have an absolute gem in him.”_

The one drawback to Liverpool signing Guehi is that he will cost a lot of money in a summer that has already been expensive for the Reds, even though he is in the final year of his contract.

Ultimately, if the money is there to spend, though, the Palace ace stands out as the best available option of all their rumoured targets, with lots of experience behind him, but his best years still ahead of him.
