The Sacramento Kings may not be done making moves this offseason. New general manager Scott Perry was blunt about their need for a point guard before landing Dennis Schroder in free agency.
But he may be on the market for more guard depth. Since then, former MVP Russell Westbrook has continued to be linked to Sacramento.
ESPN‘s Tim MacMahon reported on Tuesday that the Kings remain “the most likely destination for Westbrook.”
“It appears that Westbrook, who spent the first 11 years of his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, will play for his sixth franchise in seven seasons. He won’t be returning to the Denver Nuggets after a roller coaster season in which Westbrook finished seventh in the Sixth Man of the Year voting. The all-time leader in triple-doubles won’t continue the trend of storybook homecomings for future Hall of Fame point guards, a la Damian Lillard and Chris Paul. The Thunder will hang Westbrook’s No. 0 in the rafters after he retires, but the defending champions don’t have room on the roster, much less the rotation, or the desire to tinker with the chemistry from their title run.
League sources consider the Sacramento Kings the most likely destination for Westbrook, who will turn 37 during the first month of the season. If that’s the case, Westbrook would likely come off the bench again and share ballhandling duties with free agency addition Dennis Schroder. — Tim MacMahon”
Westbrook would provide point guard depth in the case of an injury to Schroder, while also fitting the identity that Perry’s aiming to cultivate in Sacramento’s capital.
Competitive. Tough. Team-Oriented. Disciplined. Accountable. Professional.
The nine-time All-Star can be erratic on the court, but his work ethic and competitive fire are unquestionable.
Domantas Sabonis spent his rookie season with Oklahoma City, the year Westbrook won his lone MVP. Sacramento’s big man has previously raved about what Westbrook taught him early in his career.
While there’s reasonable concern about a 36-year-old facilitator taking minutes from young players Nique Clifford and Devin Carter, his example could be beneficial to their long-term outlooks.
In 75 games played with the Nuggets last season, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds while shooting 44.9 percent from the field.
Converting just 32.3 percent from three may make for tough spacing alongside Sabonis and DeMar DeRozan.
With continued links to the Kings, all signs seem to be pointing towards Westbrook ending up in Sacramento.
