Injuries continue to plague the San Francisco 49ers’ wide receiver position. While Demarcus Robinson may face a suspension for DUI, Brandon Aiyuk is expected to start the season on the PUP list and miss at least the first five games, Trent Taylor will miss the entire season with a back injury, and Equanimeous St. Brown is also out for the season with a foot injury. Finally, Jauan Jennings aggravated his calf injury and has missed the last two weeks of training camp, and Jacob Cowing may return to practice on Tuesday after missing two and a half weeks with a hamstring injury.

Jordan Watkins suffered an apparent ankle injury at some point during Saturday’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos but still managed to play 39 of 56 offensive snaps. He led the team in both receptions and receiving yards, hauling in three passes on six targets for 56 yards, including a 50-yard reception in the first quarter. Watkins did not feel pain in his ankle until Sunday, resulting in him missing practice and undergoing an MRI on Monday.

During Monday’s press conference, Kyle Shanahan provided an injury update on Jordan Watkins, as reported by David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone. The promising rookie suffered a high-ankle sprain and is expected to be sidelined for about a month, leaving his Week 1 availability in doubt. With the injuries to the receiving corps, Watkins was poised to play an important offensive role early on, but that will have to wait.
“Jordan Watkins ended up having a high-ankle sprain,” Shanahan said, via Bonilla. “He’s gonna be out about a month.”
“He didn’t even feel it after the game. He was surprised. He actually reported some other things, came in the next day, saying how it was a little sore, maybe we should look at it. And we weren’t that worried about it until we got an MRI and it showed a high-ankle.”
