Newcastle United are weighing up a move for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa as their search for a new forward enters a critical stage, according to the Daily Mail.
The Magpies have been left scrambling for attacking reinforcements after losing out to Manchester United in the race for Benjamin Sesko, who preferred to play mid-table football for the Red Devils instead of roaming Champions League-worthy fields across Europe. Alas.
With Alexander Isak pushing to join Liverpool and the Premier League opener just a week away, Newcastle’s list of rejected bids continues to grow, now featuring—among a thousand others not listed—Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, and Hugo Ekitike.
Aghehowa, 21, enjoyed a prolific debut season in Portugal after joining Porto from Atletico Madrid, scoring 27 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions
His standout moments included a brace against Manchester United in the Europa League group stage, which is something we obviously couldn’t leave out of this post. The Nigerian forward is tied to Porto until 2029, however, and under a five-year deal that includes a €100 million release clause. You bet NUFC will not be getting there.
No formal bid has yet been made, and sources caution there is no guarantee Newcastle will follow through, although the club is understood to be actively assessing Aghehowa’s availability.
Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen also remain on Newcastle’s shortlist, but with each passing day the urgency grows for Eddie Howe’s side to secure a striker capable of leading the line if Isak departs.
