Manchester United could pursue a new goalkeeper during the transfer window.
The Red Devils have had a productive summer with four acquisitions thus far.
They have bolstered their attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, while adding young defender Diego Leon to the first-team squad.
A goalkeeper and a midfielder could be prioritised next, and Gazzetta dello Sport (page 2) claim that Paris Saint-Germain want between €40 million and €50m for United target Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italian shot-stopper has recently been dropped by Les Parisiens after his reluctance to extend his contract, which expires in the summer of 2026.
Lucas Chevalier, who signed from Lille for €55m recently, will start in goal during the upcoming UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
It is only a matter of time before Donnarumma departs. The Premier League could be his next destination with United and Chelsea in ‘pole position’.
United must beat Chelsea in Donnarumma pursuit
Andre Onana has been United’s undisputed goalkeeper in the Premier League over the past two years, but has been disappointing with his handling between the sticks.
The Cameroon international has made 12 errors leading to shots and eight errors leading to goals in his time at United. No other Premier League shot-stopper has managed more.
Onana did not play any part in pre-season due to a hamstring injury, but he has now returned to full training. He could start in goal in Sunday’s curtain-raiser against Arsenal.
Regardless, we won’t be surprised if United are contemplating his exit. The hierarchy may have to cut their losses on Onana to recruit Donnarumma before the transfer window closes.
Donnarumma would be a clear upgrade on Onana. The AC Milan graduate has vastly improved with his distribution from the back during his time with the European champions.
The 26-year-old has also caught the eye with his strong reflexes. He was exceptional in the Champions League last term with several world-class saves against Liverpool and Arsenal.
It appears a no-brainer decision to land his signature for the reported fee (€40-50m). He would represent a superb signing, given he is only 26 and has plenty of years left in his prime.
Chelsea are also open to the possibility of replacing the error-prone Robert Sanchez, and United must be proactive to secure Donnarumma’s services ahead of the London outfit.
