We’re approaching that stage of the summer transfer window where clubs often fall into traps and make rash decisions to make sure they are ‘ready’ for the new season and not left short.

Eddie Howe, however, has consistently said that we must not change our approach to new signings, stressing that the ‘right players’ must be targeted to avoid mistakes that could harm us in the long-term.

With that in mind, it leaves you wondering where the boss may currently stand regarding a potential free transfer deal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is being linked with a move once again this week…

According to [talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/3461668/dominic-calvert-lewin-sacks-agent-premier-league-transfer-talks/), Dominic Calvert-Lewin has sacked his agent ahead of crunch talks over his future.

The general understanding seems to be that the striker has been disappointed with the lack of progress made in finding him a new club, seeing him take matters into his own hands.

Following his departure from Everton earlier this summer, it’s claimed the 28-year-old has since held discussions with Newcastle, Manchester United and Leeds United over a potential move.

The striker perceives each team as being ‘higher up’ in the proverbial Premier League food chain, having previously shot down a move to Sunderland.

The issue for us, however, is where he fits. As a third choice striker, it could work, but Calvert-Lewin arriving as the cover for Wissa – who is Callum Wilson’s likely replacement – is not a palatable route to selling Isak, nor would he be welcomed as an alternative to the Brentford star who scored 19 last season.

On the surface, signing Calvert-Lewin might not do much to excite our fanbase, particularly after the torrid window we’ve had. However, there’s some potential benefits to signing the free agent.

First and foremost, we could have another Lloyd Kelly situation in the works: having signed from Bournemouth on a free last summer, the defender could hardly break into the starting XI, but was still sold for instant profit to Juventus this summer.

As an England international keen to prove people wrong, if Calvert-Lewin can simply maintain a basic level of fitness and score a few goals when called upon, then he could be another player we can flip for profit further down the line: something which may be particularly helpful when we no doubt re-enter the striker market next season.
