‘For me’: Robbie Fowler makes controversial Viktor Gyokeres claim that might stun Arsenal fans

Arsenal fans are now only days away from seeing Viktor Gyokeres in competitive action under Mikel Arteta.

In a 3-0 win over Athletic Club in the Emirates Cup, Viktor Gyokeres scored his first goal for Arsenal, and his famous celebration was finally witnessed in N5.

On the end of a superb Martin Zubimendi delivery, Gyokeres headed the ball into the far corner – a striker who supposedly can’t score with his head.

The early signs have been very positive from the Swede, even if he may take some time to fully adjust to Arteta’s football.

In that regard, Noni Madueke might help Gyokeres succeed at Arsenal, and there are already signs that the former Chelsea winger can provide plenty of good service from the left.

Viktor Gyokeres told he’ll score fewer goals at Arsenal than Joao Pedro will at Chelsea

That being said, former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has now made a Gyokeres claim that might surprise one or two Arsenal fans.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Fowler was asked who would score more goals for their new club this season: Joao Pedro, Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko.

And whilst Fowler barely even mentioned Sesko at Manchester United, he did think that Pedro could outscore Gyokeres whilst playing for Chelsea this season.

Explaining his choice, Fowler said: “For me I think it’ll be Pedro, I know Gyokeres is coming in but I think for me he’s unproven.

“We talk about pressures of playing somewhere – I think there might be a little too much pressure on Gyokeres because everyone is wanting him to score goals.

“Again, it’s similar to the impact Nunez had at Liverpool – so I think I’ll go for Pedro to do as well as anyone just because of where he’s been and the league he’s already been at.”

Joao Pedro has never scored more than 10 goals in a Premier League season

As mentioned, 23-year-old Pedro will have the slight advantage of having already adapted to English football – he’s played 89 games in the Premier League and 73 in the Championship.

However, in his three top flight seasons for Brighton and Watford, he’s never gone beyond 10 league goals.

2023/24 Brighton 31 9 4

2024/25 Brighton 27 10 5

Joao Pedro’s record during his three seasons in the Premier League.

And perhaps that explains why most would agree with Ally McCoist’s view, when asked the same question.

Given his own interpretation, McCoist said: “I think they’ll all score goals but I’ll actually go for Gyokeres, I saw enough of him.

“I know there’s question marks about all signings, but the one thing I’ll say is I think he’ll probably get more chances in that Arsenal team, than certainly Sesko will at United, potentially where Joao Pedro might at Chelsea.

“I just think he’ll get more chances at Arsenal and for that reason, I think he’ll get the most goals.”
