Alexander Isak was once again missing from Newcastle United’s weekend friendlies, as the storm over his future shows no sign of easing.

The Swedish striker, who has been at the centre of persistent transfer links to Liverpool all summer, remains locked in a game of brinkmanship with the Tyneside club.

His latest absence comes after a fractious few weeks, which began when he withdrew from Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia — officially citing a minor thigh injury.

Liverpool’s pursuit has only added fuel to the fire. The Premier League champions tested Newcastle’s resolve with a £110 million bid last week, but the Magpies swiftly rebuffed the approach.

Isak, under contract at St James’ Park until 2028, therefore finds himself in a difficult position, with Newcastle under no financial pressure to bow to external interest.

The Athletic has provided an update on the situation of Alexander Isak, with the report claiming that Isak feels he will never ever play for Newcastle United again – regardless of whether he gets his move this summer:

“The anticipation is that Isak will miss the trip to Villa Park, with his future shrouded in uncertainty. Based on conversations with sources privy to the matter, The Athletic understands Isak is adamant he will never represent Newcastle again.”

“Even if Newcastle refuse to sell the 25-year-old Sweden striker and he remains on Tyneside when the transfer window closes, Isak regards his career at St James’s Park as finished and has no desire to reintegrate into the squad.”

Liverpool’s admiration for the Sweden international remains undiminished, even after the recent signing of Hugo Ekitike.

With Luis Díaz joining Bayern Munich and Darwin Núñez making the switch to Al-Hilal, Arne Slot’s attacking options still look thin on the ground as the new season approaches.
