Man Utd will unlock Gianluigi Donnarumma transfer by pulling one lever

Manchester United will not launch a concrete pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma unless Andre Onana leaves before the summer deadline, according to reports. Donnarumma's surprise availability represents an enticing market opportunity, especially for a club with such uncertainty between the sticks.

However, United have spent heavily this summer, splashing around £200million to sign Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko in an attacking overhaul. And with Ruben Amorim's sights now firmly on midfield reinforcements, concerns over Onana and Altay Bayindir's suitability are on the back burner.

According to The Athletic, Donnarumma is willing to leave PSG in the coming weeks, should the right club come forward as suitors.

The European champions have brutally signed Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier to replace Donnarumma after contract talks stalled.

The 26-year-old has entered the final 10 months of his current deal and looks destined to leave after Luis Enrique excluded from from his UEFA Super Cup squad.

United have been linked after a rejected loan bid for Aston Villa's Emi Martinez earlier in the summer indicated Amorim's desire for change.

But the Old Trafford giants are not expected to enter the frame for Donnarumma unless significant progress is made with sales this month.

The Athletic add that United are only likely to recruit a new goalkeeper if Onana departs, and there are currently no signs of that outcome.

The Cameroon goalkeeper has missed the entirety of pre-season after suffering a hamstring injury, handing the gloves to Bayindir, but is now back in training.

Onana is hoping to be passed fit for Sunday's Premier League curtain-raiser against Arsenal and could feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly this week to get up to speed.

United's first-choice goalkeeper came under intense scrutiny for a series of errors last season, including in a 2-2 draw at Lyon in the Europa League.

After that match, Amorim publicly insisted he retained faith in Onana, stating: "There's nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him.

"The most important thing is to be natural, and then when the time comes, I will choose the best 11 to play. But I'm really confident in Andre."

He looks set to put his trust in Onana again this season, but it is a decision that is unsurprisingly drawing sceptics.
