Manchester United and Newcastle have been shopping within the same transfer aisle this summer, as both clubs were keen to reinforce the attack.
After failing to qualify for Europe, many had predicted a tumultuous summer for Manchester United, with financial difficulty expected to impact the quality of transfers obtainable this summer.
However, this hasn’t panned out to be the case, with United shopping at the same level as Saudi Arabian funded Newcastle for attacking talents and coming out on top all three occasions.
First, United signed Matheus Cunha for £62.5m, beating Newcastle to the Brazilian’s signature back in June, despite serious interest for much of 2025 from St. James’ Park.
United also won the race to sign Bryan Mbeumo, with Newcastle, Spurs and Chelsea all snubbed by the Cameroonian in favour of the Red Devils.
Finally, most recently, United wrapped up the signing of Benjamin Sesko, with the Slovenian turning down Newcastle despite being offered more money.
Missing three targets to United in one window has led to plenty of fury amongst the Newcastle fanbase, and now their club is targeting one player United want to get rid of.

Newcastle United among the clubs interested in Rasmus Hojlund
Newcastle heads were well and truly gone last week when it emerged that Sesko had rejected them and instead decided to join Manchester United, as it is something which has happened to them all summer long.
More United News
Not only with United, but with Hugo Ekitike at Liverpool, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro at Chelsea and Mohammed Kudus at Tottenham. All of this means Newcastle have only Anthony Elanga as an attacking addition this summer.
However, they want more and now Laurie Whitwell has reported with The Athletic that Newcastle are one of four clubs who are monitoring the situation around Rasmus Hojlund.
The report states that AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Newcastle United are all looking at Hojlund as a striker signing this summer.
Milan are thought to be leaders for Hojlund, with the Dane losing his place at Old Trafford following the arrival of Sesko from RB Leipzig who are also suitors for Hojlund.
Due to this, there is a growing acceptance that Hojlund needs to leave Old Trafford in order to rebuild his career.
Ruben Amorim has left no doubt over Rasmus Hojlund’s future at Manchester United
While it is tough not to feel bad for Hojlund being pushed out, with the striker being a boyhood United fan, but on the otherside he has had two full seasons to prove himself, yet he has actually regressed.
Amorim left Hojlund on the bench against Fiorentina, which was a telling indication of his current status within the plans of the head coach.
Worse, Amorim even noted his team lacking a striker in the game, while not feeling Hojlund added enough to justify bringing him on.
The United boss watched Hojlund for six months, which is a good sample size, and in that time he scored eight goals in 40 games, not exactly the clinical forward who can raise the club back to the top.
It seems Hojlund will be sent out on loan this summer, and whether he then goes permanently or comes back to United, he needs to be better in almost every department at his next club.
