“We’re not talking about Van Basten”–Manchester United player slammed for dithering on transfer

On Monday, [Gazzetta dello Sport](https://sportwitness.co.uk/tuesday-can-be-key-for-manchester-united-exit-director-in-england-aims-to-close-deal-soon/) reported that Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund was having doubts about a move to AC Milan.

The Italian side were making attempts to convince the striker, who was said to be reluctant to leave Old Trafford.

AC Milan’s legendary former manager Arrigo Sacchi has now spoken to [Gazzetta dello Sport](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Serie-A/Milan/12-08-2025/sacchi-hojlund-non-vuole-il-milan-resti-dov-e-non-e-van-basten_preview.shtml?reason=unauthenticated&origin=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gazzetta.it%2FCalcio%2FSerie-A%2FMilan%2F12-08-2025%2Fsacchi-hojlund-non-vuole-il-milan-resti-dov-e-non-e-van-basten.shtml) about Højlund and was asked about the Dane’s mindset on a move to the Rossoneri.

Sacchi had some criticism for the player, saying: _“First of all – we’re not talking about Van Basten, nor one of the best centre-forwards in Europe right now. He’s a decent player, nothing more.”_

Sacchi urged Milan to also look for other strikers if the Manchester United player isn’t jumping at the opportunity: _“So, this push to acquire him seems exaggerated to me. However, since there’s a shortage of strikers, I understand the Rossoneri management’s desire to secure one. But he should want to come to Italy, and not act up.”_

The legendary Milan figure stated that ideally, Højlund should pack his bags and join Milan without any second thoughts.

_“I don’t understand his decision. If AC Milan calls you, you should pack your bags and get on the first plane to Malpensa. AC Milan is a legendary name in the world of football. I would take every player who is signed for a tour of the trophy room so they can fully understand where they ended up.”_

_“They should be thankful for being signed, not the other way around. Do I make myself clear? The club comes first, then the player. Sure,  Manchester United, for goodness’ sake, is a legendary team, but on one side there’s a club, AC Milan, that offers you a permanent position, and on the other there’s another that will do everything it can to sell you. Which would you choose?”_

The 22-year-old has Serie A experience from his time at Atalanta and a familiar environment could help him improve and reach his potential.

At Manchester United, Højlund is unlikely to play too many games not just because of Benjamin Šeško’s arrival but because Joshua Zirkzee and Chido Obi will also compete for the striker’s spot.

It’s worth noting Rasmus Højlund himself has remained silent, and his agent hasn’t said anything either, so his reported stance regarding a transfer may not even be how he genuinely feels.

Arrigo Sacchi clearly didn’t consider that, though.
