Premier League make Chelsea vs Crystal Palace announcement after controversial rule break last season

Chelsea are just days away from making their return to Premier League action, and have now learnt the logistics surrounding their opening day fixture.

The Blues will get things underway at Stamford Bridge against Crystal Palace on Sunday, and Enzo Maresca already has some big calls to make when it comes to his squad selection.

Liam Delap and Joao Pedro are competing for the number nine spot, while a number of centre-backs are looking to start and make their case to the manager after Levi Colwill’s serious injury.

The Blues will feel confident that they have enough to win the game on the pitch, and two impressive performances in pre-season didn’t show a side who were going to suffer with a Club World Cup hangover.

Darren England announced as Chelsea vs Crystal Palace referee despite controversial moment last season

The Premier League have announced the referees who will officiate the opening games of the season, a frequent topic of discussion amongst the Chelsea fans.

As per the official Premier League website, Darren England will take charge of the Blues’ opening game of the season.

Ian Hussin and Akil Howson will be the assistant referees, whilst James Bell will be in charge of VAR for the London derby.

The last time the Blues were officiated by England saw them pick up a handsome 6-2 win over Wolves to give Maresca his first Premier League win.

However, the game was not short of controversy. Cole Palmer’s goal came as a result of a quick Robert Sanchez goal kick, where the ball was not still, therefore meaning the goal should not have stood.

Chelsea’s results with Darren England as referee

The Blues have only been officiated by England on four occasions since he became a professional referee, and currently boast an unbeaten record in those games.

Frank Lampard’s final game in charge before being sacked for the first time came in the FA Cup against Morecambe, and despite the 4-0 win he was relieved of his duties in favour of Thomas Tuchel.

A couple of underwhelming 2-2 draws against Everton and Burnley in 2023 and 2024 respectively are the only other times he has been in charge, however the referee cannot be blamed for either result.

England sent off Lorenz Assignon when the score was 0-0 against Burnley, however a Palmer brace was not enough to get them over the line.
