Liverpool could now sign 'fantastic' player before deadline day if they can't get Marc Guehi

Liverpool still have plenty of time left in the summer transfer window to add some new faces to their ranks.

They’ve already been one of the busiest teams in the Premier League this season regarding transfers, but with the recent sales of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez boosting their war chest, there’s still plenty of room for Liverpool to make some more additions.

Players such as Alexander Isak have been consistently linked with an Anfield switch, but there are also a couple of other names that have been thrown into the hat, such as Marc Guehi.

However, since no moves have been made over the last couple of weeks, the Reds may end up turning their attention elsewhere.

Liverpool could end up signing Giovanni Leoni if a move for Marc Guehi doesn’t work out

As mentioned, Guehi has been one of the most heavily-linked players to Liverpool this summer.

The Reds are in dire need of a new centre-back, with Slot only having three senior options to choose from at the moment.

And now, as per a report from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, it seems like the Reds have their backup option already lined up.

“As revealed four days ago, Liverpool FC are seriously considering talented 18 y/o promising centre-back Giovanni Leoni,” he wrote.

Giovanni Leoni would be a smart investment for Liverpool

One of the main things that Richard Hughes has made clear this summer is that he’s buying players with big potential.

Indeed, players such as Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong are coming off the back of rather impressive seasons, but with them both being young, there’s still plenty of room for them to grow.

Guehi would likely be the ideal target for Liverpool, but with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate already among their ranks, the Englishman would have to fight for a starting spot.

However, since Leoni is only 18 years old, he’d likely be happy to take more of a back seat and wait to be given his chance in the future.

The centre-back has had an impressive season with Parma in Serie A, and although there are likely still areas of his game that will need fine-tuning, it feels like it would be a smart investment from Liverpool.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what the future has in store, but for now, a move for Leoni feels like it makes the most sense.

That is, especially since Andrea Pirlo dubbed the defender a “fantastic” player.
