Match of the Day 2 rebranded as BBC make change to Premier League highlights show

Popular Premier League highlights show, Match of the Day 2, has undergone a rebrand ahead of the 2025/26 season. The new campaign gets underway this weekend, and Gary Lineker's departure in May has sparked a series of changes to the BBC's coverage.

Match of the Day 2, previously hosted by Mark Chapman on Sunday nights, will now also be known as Match of the Day, like the BBC's flagship Saturday show. Chapman, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates will rotate as they lead the coverage on Saturdays, Sundays and in midweek after European action.

MOTD kicks off with a bang on Saturday, with Liverpool vs Bournemouth, Aston Villa vs Newcastle, Tottenham vs Burnley and Wolves vs Man City on the billing.

Sunday's show will recap Chelsea vs Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest vs Brentford and the main event of the weekend, Manchester United vs Arsenal.

Chapman is set to host the first Saturday show of the season, which airs at 10.20pm, while Logan will helm Sunday's episode, starting at 10.30pm.

But first, Cates will make her on-screen debut as part of the trio when she hosts a Premier League preview show at 11.10pm on Wednesday.

Wayne Rooney is primed to be a prominent fixture in one of the two pundit seats this season after reportedly penning an £800,000 deal with Match of the Day.

The highlights show is entering a new era after the departure of Lineker, who had acted as host for 26 years.

Lineker was scheduled to lead the BBC's coverage of the 2026 World Cup but left the corporation with immediate effect in May after a series of clashes with bosses.

The 64-year-old brought forward his exit after sharing a post relating to the current conflict in Gaza that included an antisemitic symbol.

Lineker subsequently apologised and insisted that he was unaware that images of rats had been used to depict Jews throughout history.

He later walked away from the BBC and is now focusing on his podcast company, Goalhanger, under which he heads The Rest Is Football with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

Lineker, the highest-paid presenter in BBC history, is also set to make the switch to ITV to host a new Saturday night game show, The Box.

All eyes will firmly be on the new-look Match of the Day when the curtain rises on another Premier League season this weekend.
