Norwich City player believes this change is required to see the best from ‘invaluable’ star

Jacob Wright featured in Norwich City’s opening day defeat to Millwall in the Championship at the weekend.

The teenager joined the Canaries permanently this summer from Manchester City, having impressed through his loan at Norwich last season.

He is hopeful life under Liam Manning may see the club return to the Premier League after several years without top-flight football following their relegation in 2022.

In order to do this, the club have been busy in the transfer market, while they have looked to bid farewell to a couple of players like Shane Duffy.

While further business may help get the players needed to ensure Liam Manning’s approach can succeed, Jacob Wright believes there is another change required.

Wright believes Norwich need to alter their ‘wavelength’

Norwich City lost their opening Championship game of the season at Carrow Road to Millwall 2-1, with their only goal coming through a piece of Josh Sargent magic.

This goal demonstrated to Wright just how ‘invaluable’ the American striker is and why there has been interest in him from around Europe.

The teenager spoke to the Pink Un after their defeat about just how they need to adapt to get the best out of the star striker.

He said: “Josh is invaluable to us. He is the best striker in the league. I think that’s why so many teams are keen on taking him and why we’re so keen to try and keep him.

“Josh is an excellent player and a great captain. I think it’s more about getting on the same wavelength as each other and knowing that not everything’s coming to feet and players are going to make runs behind.

“It’s about changing the wiring in your brain (from last season) that it’s not just feet, feet, feet. You can play in behind them sometimes.”

Liam Manning hopeful Sargent remains at Norwich

Liam Manning is a fan of his striker Josh Sargent, not just for the ability he has while on the ball but for his work ethic off it too.

This led him to suggest Norwich City should build the culture of the club around the 25-year-old after their defeat to Millwall; however, he understands the club must be ready if he leaves this summer.

He said: “I think you, not just with Josh now; I think you do that for every player. I think the best practice is to be proactive with the work you do…With the interest, you’d be mad to not do anything behind the scenes to be prepared. So, of course, we want him to stay, but we have to be prepared if it doesn’t happen.

“Yeah, he epitomised everything, for me, that we should build our culture on.

“I think, you know, the way he worked, the goal speaks volumes in terms of he’s got no given right to score, but his attitude to lead the line, to compete, you know.

“And like you said, he probably came out on top given the number of times he was fouled, even a bit at the end there. I felt for him a bit today because he put in a huge amount of hard work and didn’t receive a huge amount of quality.”
