Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 8/12: Various Levels of Absurdity

CLEVELAND, OHIO (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans! Yesterday was a busy news day, for reasons both good and ill, and I've got plenty to blather about this morning. Be sure to keep an eye on the Daily News Ticker, which provides a comprehensive set of links updated throughout the day.

Let's dive in!

THE DAILY BLOVIATION

COME ON, MYLES! This has been a year when Myles Garrett, the best edge rusher in the NFL, has been starting to stand up and help lead the Cleveland Browns in the locker room. He has been more out front and visible as a spokesman for the defense, and somewhat more accessible to the media. As coaches and fans expect another great season from the Aggie product, he needs to extend his leadership to being a more effective role model for his younger teammates, both on and off the field.

While Garrett remains a private person and should be allowed to spend time away from the cameras, he needs to stop with reckless speeding and the news-generating speeding tickets (Discussion).

I won't lecture those who are upset by Garrett's behavior. I'm not in the "outrage" camp or the "no big deal" camp of those telling other fans to calm down about it. We're talking about a great player, instrumental to this team's success, who the team has invested huge dollars and a big chunk of their salary cap. His driving behavior risks his own health and the success of the team. It's not a good look for a leader. Simple as that.

Knock it off, Myles. You can afford a gigantic curved screen monitor and the best racing simulators on the planet. If you want to drive fast, do it virtually where you can't get hurt or provide easy headlines. Stay safe.

USELESS DEPTH CHART SAYS WHAT? Every week, I receive the game preview for the upcoming week from the team via email. Every week, it includes an unofficial "depth chart." Every week, it borders on useless relative to credentialed reporting from camp. Every week, people on social media, and even some media members, overreact to it. Every week, that overreaction provides a chuckle.

Just a reminder for folks out there who don't know (which are few on this site): This depth chart doesn't reflect the inner thinking of the coaching staff or how they perceive the roles on the team, many of which are being juggled right here and now. It's done by the Communications and Media team, who are able to watch the rotations in camp and come up with a depth chart which is basically what would be expected from a particularly well-informed fan.

It's a nice thing to have in hand, but it doesn't document the current standings of the "quarterback battle" any more than counting who is doing what reps with what squad that we get from daily practice reporting.

END OF AN ERA: Back in the early days of the "Save Our Browns" movement in the mid-90s, a large group of fans gathered on America Online forums. AOL was the internet for some people; its omnipresent connection and "You Got Mail" sounds served as common background noise for many people discovering the internet. Now the AOL dial-up service is finally shutting down.

I don't know if what remains of AOL still has groups like it used to, or if social networks and such have obsoleted them, but I do remember joining some of the hardiest Browns fans around back then for dinner the weekend that the old Stadium was opened one last time for fans before it was torn down. AOL was their home base. I can still pull many of their names from memory.

It's just a reminder that everything built on the latest technology will eventually fade. America Online was once a giant. Now a part of Yahoo, it's just a sidenote these days. AI threatens Google search, Reddit has become a corporate entity, and Digg.com is nearly forgotten. Everything passes, and it does so especially quickly if it's tied to technology that is constantly changing.

YOUR OBR SUB JUST BECAME MORE VALUABLE: I should probably slap this all over the front page and our social media outlets, but an OBR subscription just became incredibly valuable for UFC fans. Yes, UFC fans.

247Sports' corporate parent, Paramount/Skydance, has just signed an exclusive deal with UFC for the next seven years that will feature a ton of exclusive UFC content and live events on Paramount+. **OBR subscribers get Paramount+ for free when they renew **at the regular price, making all these UFC events available to them alongside OBR/247Sports content when they're a regular subscriber.

I'd suggest people who are anxious to take advantage of this buy a monthly subscription or, if you want 50% off an OBR annual subscription, take advantage of the deal we have going right now. Just remember that you don't get Paramount+ and UFC until you renew. You can get Paramount+ faster by buying it monthly and then taking advantage of an annual upgrade offer at a significant discount later. Monthly subscribers should consider upgrading to a yearly subscription as soon as possible. Click here to subscribe.

THE SANDERS THING HAS GONE OVER THE EVENT HORIZON OF ABSURDITY: I shouldn't give sportsyappers like Colin Cowherd any mindshare, but Cowherd's weighing in on a topic is a marker of some type for certain narratives jumping the shark.

In his latest, Cowherd scolds Shedeur Sanders for his largely joking interaction with a local radio analyst, claiming it's a sign that Sanders is distracted and not focusing on the playbook, etc, etc. This is nonsense, of course, as most humans are capable of doing two things at once. For example, I am writing this and digesting breakfast at the same time. It's tough for an objectively unskilled hairy primate like myself, but I accomplish it nonetheless.

The reason that this caught my eye is not only because Awful Announcing wrote an article on it, but because of Cowherd's tiresome rant about Browns fans: "I'm tired of Cleveland fans saying, 'Colin, you are making a lot of this little stuff.' Yeah, that's what you said about Johnny Manziel, and Baker Mayfield, and Deshaun Watson's court stuff in Houston. How about you sit this one out, Browns fans. You are 0/3 on it's a no big deal."

Um, well, Colin, I don't think Browns fans minimized Watson's "court stuff" in Houston. I lost Browns fans and site contributors over it as they walked away from the team. Plus, well, Baker Mayfield hasn't exactly gone on to be unsuccessful. And Browns fans stopped giving Manziel the benefit of the doubt as soon as he showed he didn't deserve it.

As I mentioned, I shouldn't give uninformed trolls like Cowherd any space in my daily commentary, but there are some less-informed fans who take him seriously. If I can get one of them to stop listening, my work here is validated.

Have a good one! GO BROWNS!

Positive news from the world of sports and beyond...

Auction raises thousands to pay for people's emergency medical care through the power of cheese - (goodgoodgood.co)

This is a genuinely positive story, but it's the cheese angle that caught my attention. I don't think that we, as a society, appreciate cheese enough, nor do we celebrate whoever it was that first had the bravery to eat ex-milk, which had solidified. This equates in my mind to the first person who looked at a crab, urchin, or mushroom and decided "I'm a-gonna eat that".

I don't like seafood or mushrooms, so I don't think those people should be celebrated. Especially not the latter, for their contribution of pure evil in defacing delicious steak with fungus. But cheese... CHEESE IS AWESOME, which makes this story of charity even more awesome itself.
