Leeds United have sold a number of players in recent years who are now thriving elsewhere, and this could now benefit them.

Raphinha has become one of the best wingers in the world at Barcelona, while Georginio Rutter is among those competing in the Premier League.

Leeds have sometimes undersold players in recent years, but some of their deals have come with the bonus of a sell-on clause.

One former player is now attracting transfer interest, and this could lead to a windfall for the Whites in what has been a busy transfer window.

Toulouse director addresses Charlie Cresswell interest

Charlie Cresswell never quite made it at Leeds, but the defender has now developed well in France, and is attracting interest after some bright performances with Toulouse.

Cresswell is still just 22, and his excellent campaign with Toulouse saw his side finish 10th in Ligue 1.

The centre-back made 34 appearances in all competitions for the French side last season.

With several clubs rumoured to be interested in the Englishman, Toulouse President Viktor Bezhani has now admitted that Cresswell – or indeed any of his teammates – could be sold.

Cresswell hardly featured when at Leeds

“We are delighted by the amount of interest in our players,” he told L’Equipe (August 12).

“It shows that we are doing good things and that the rest of Europe is watching us. It isn’t a secret, if a good offer arrives, we’ll have a look at it.”

Leeds to earn sell-on fee from Cresswell sale

Leeds sold Cresswell to Toulouse for around £3.8 million in 2024, but could be set to profit further on their former defender.

Cresswell was reportedly given an £18m price tag earlier in this window, and Leeds inserted a 15 per cent sell-on clause when they agreed the deal to sell him.

This means that, if Cresswell does move this summer, Leeds could be set to earn £2.1m as a result of that sell-on clause.

However, they could have earned even more if Cresswell was simply loaned out with a longer contract, or kept at the club and played regularly.

This is easy to say in hindsight, though, as he faced stiff competition at Leeds and there was little guarantee or expectation that his value would rise so significantly after one year.
