Everton are set to land one of the headline transfers of the summer as Jack Grealish closes in on a move to Merseyside.

The forward was always going to leave Manchester this summer after being ostracised by Pep Guardiola.

Now, Everton have agreed a season-long loan deal with Man City, which can become permanent for £50million next summer.

However, does the transfer still represent a gamble for the Toffees given the numbers involved?

Everton make bold statement with Grealish transfer

Everton will pay up to half of Grealish’s £300,000 per week wages once he secures a switch to Merseyside.

Grealish will wear the number 18 shirt at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, following in the footsteps of Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney.

Now, football finance expert Dan Plumley – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – has provided insight on the deal.

“It absolutely is one of those transfers that you look at and go, that could be brilliant or it could not work, and if it is a 50/50 wage split, and I’ve said this before, I think it had to be for Everton to get this deal done.

“There was no way they were going to pay all of his wages, so if it is a halfway house, then that suggests an alignment with that 50/50 transfer.

The Toffees are expected to cover half of his wages

“It could be brilliant for them, and you could look at this as the season goes on and say that even covering half of his wages is worth the gamble, but it is still a financial outlay that is significant.

“That’s a different market to where they’ve been, certainly in the last few years, given all the problems they’ve had.

“Going into a new ownership era, it’s a big move, it’s a bold statement, and it could pay off for them in a positive way, but it’s certainly a change, it’s a gear shift for them in terms of what they’ve done.

“But I think sensible that they have come to an agreement with City on wages because it just lowers that risk a little bit, but it’s still a big outlay.”

Why Grealish and the Toffees are the perfect fit

It was paramount that the England international secured the right move, and it seems he has done just that.

Grealish is a confidence player, and David Moyes is exactly the type of manager who will instill that back into the forward.

At City, the 29-year-old was not the main man, but on Merseyside, he can play a more pivotal role with increased freedom.

Furthermore, the Everton faithful will get behind him, and if he feels the love of the fans, then that can only drive him on.

Yes, it is a gamble, but the Toffees are the ideal club to get Grealish back to playing his best football.
