Injury woe and possible debut vs Barcelona - Leeds United loan watch including Mateo Joseph

Leeds United currently have four players out on loan and some of them have already played for their new teams since leaving Elland Road.

Boss Daniel Farke said he is pleased to have sorted out the futures of such squad members before the season got underway. “Our offensive players who have left us were not really in our plans for the new season,” he added on Saturday.

“So it doesn't really make a big difference but to have this business sorted in general is quite good, yes.” There are a number of unwanted attackers who are still to find new suitors including Patrick Bamford and Sam Greenwood, though the latter is in talks over a permanent exit.

Two others are out of the door though, while a midfielder and a defender are also plying their trade away from Elland Road for this season.

Joe Gelhardt

Gelhardt secured his loan return to Hull City on Saturday and earned 10 minutes of action in the Championship goalless draw with Coventry City later in the day. The attacker was not part of Farke’s plans this season and was not taken on tour.

Leeds initially sounded out a permanent exit for Gelhardt but club chiefs came to the conclusion that a straight loan would still suffice. The 23-year-old, who scored five times in 20 Hull games upon last season’s January loan, still has two years on his Leeds contract.

Mateo Joseph

Joseph took part in his first training session at Mallorca over the weekend, having had his loan deal formalised on Saturday. The 21-year-old, who had asked to leave the Leeds and failed to join the squad in Germany for pre-season, could make his debut against Barcelona on Saturday.

Leeds were adamant on sanctioning a straight loan for a striker whose value could rise with a promising season away. Joseph himself indicated that his time at United was at an end in a goodbye post which included: "It's true that I would have preferred things to end differently.

“There are situations that haven't been easy, and sometimes not everything depends on you. I trust that time puts everything into perspective, and maybe one day I'll have the chance to tell my side of the story.”

Charlie Crew

Another player who returned to his January loan club, Charlie Crew, featured for 62 minutes in Doncaster Rovers’ 2-1 win over Mansfield Town in League One, being taken off seven minutes after getting booked.

Crew played a role in Rovers winning the League Two title last season, with his 13 appearances impressing staff. The defensive midfielder featured for Leeds during the friendlies in Germany last month before securing his switch.

Max Wober

Wober got off to the worst possible start at Werder Bremen, according to reports in Germany. BILD published a photo last week appearing to show the Leeds loanee receiving treatment on his knee during a training session.

The centre-back had to undergo two rounds of knee surgery last season and only played nine Leeds games overall as a result. However, recent reports in Germany have suggested Wober has returned to training and could make his league debut for the club against Rasmus Kristensen's Eintracht Frankfurt later this month.
