Newcastle United are unexpectedly facing a fight to keep Kieran Trippier after the England international attracted interest from several clubs, including Ligue 1 side Monaco, according to the Daily Mail.
The 33-year-old full-back, who played 25 Premier League games last season, is understood to be open to leaving this summer. However, Eddie Howe is reportedly unwilling to allow Trippier’s sale without first securing an incoming transfer to fill the void he’d leave Newcastle with.
Trippier, a key figure since joining from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, has already experienced life abroad, spending two-and-a-half years in Spain before his move to Tyneside.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have completed a £34 million signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan. While he’s a player capable of covering at right-back, Thiaw’s widely known and considered a natural central defender.
Howe also has Tino Livramento, Emil Krafth, and Harrison Ashby as options, though Livramento often featured on the left side last season.
The potential loss of Trippier would add to a turbulent summer for the Magpies, already grappling with Alexander Isak’s push to join Liverpool. Isak will miss the Premier League opener against Aston Villa after making his intentions clear, with Newcastle refusing to sell until they secure a replacement.
Newcastle are pressing ahead with efforts to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, whose £40 million valuation remains a stumbling block after an earlier £25 million bid was rejected, in what might be the final addition to Howe’s side for next season.
