Reports on Monday evening stated that Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier is subject to interest from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco this summer.
He was the first player to arrive on Tyneside following the historic takeover in 2021, but he could be the next player leaving the Magpies in the summer transfer window.
Kieran Trippier is a pioneer at Newcastle United, joining the club from Atletico Madrid while they were in the relegation zone, helping them stay in the Premier League and pushing them up the table in the following seasons.
Having lost his place in the starting XI last season, Trippier came back into Newcastle’s squad when Lewis Hall suffered a season-ending injury to help the Magpies win their first major trophy since 1969. However, the 34-year-old could soon be leaving Newcastle after reports of interest from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.
Newcastle fans are reluctant to see Trippier leave this summer, with depth a clear issue, and his undeniable qualities a key reason why he should remain on Tyneside for another year. The former England international has one year left on his deal, so he may consider the move to Monaco. But in the meantime, there is one person who could help him decide to explore other avenues.

Trippier has already experienced life away from English football, with his move to Spain proving successful. The defender won La Liga with Atletico in 2021 before moving back to England for his Newcastle move a few months later.
There has been a lot of speculation over Trippier’s future in recent years. In 2024, Trippier was subject to interest from Bayern Munich, with an offer being rejected by Eddie Howe.
In January, there was interest in Trippier from the Turkish Super Lig, but the deals came to nothing. However, the interest from Monaco feels different, as Trippier has a former teammate who can convince him to join.

Eric Dier played alongside Trippier at Tottenham Hotspur for years before they both went their separate ways. However, Dier could be used as an asset to Monaco in the hopes of getting a deal over the line. Private talks with Dier could easily sway Trippier into joining Monaco, who are one of the few clubs that would be willing to put up similar money to what he is currently on at Newcastle.
The belief is that Trippier earns around £120,000-a-week at Newcastle, so most deals involving him over the last 18 months may not have been the most financially beneficial to Newcastle, as they may have been obliged to pay some of his wages even after he left.

Howe understandably wants to keep Trippier at Newcastle until his contract expires in 2026, but the bright lights and festivities of Monaco could be far too appealing for Trippier.
At 34, Trippier is approaching the twilight of his career, so he will look at things differently than he did a few years ago. Reports from earlier in the summer have already shared what Trippier thinks of leaving Newcastle.
Trippier is considering his options with Newcastle this summer, with his reason being more game time elsewhere. Tino Livramento has taken Trippier’s place in the starting XI, and it is difficult to see him winning it back next season.
Despite his wishes, Howe is still a big fan of Trippier and values his leadership qualities.
