Patrick Mahomes fans who were hoping to see an extended run from the two-time All-Pro quarterback in Saturday’s preseason game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Arizona Cardinals were left disappointed.

This is after coach Andy Reid decided to give Mahomes just three plays in the entire game before pulling him out of the contest entirely. The six-time Pro Bowler finished with 1-of-1 completed passes, one passing yard and one touchdown.

Back-up quarterbacks Bailey Zappe, Chris Oladokun and Gardner Minshew took over for the rest of the game as the Chiefs suffered a 20-17 loss in their preseason opener at State Farm Stadium.

Kansas City will be back in action on Friday in another preseason matchup. This time around, they will face the Seattle Seahawks on the road. When asked if he believes he’ll get more run against the Seahawks on Saturday, Mahomes was non-committal.

“Hopefully, we’ll see,” he told reporter Kay Adams. “I always let Coach Reid make the decisions, but I’ll be out there at some point in the preseason and hopefully get a couple more drives.”

The silver lining here is that despite the lack of certainty in his statement, Mahomes did promise that he would play. He’s also hoping to get more time on the field against the Seahawks, and perhaps in their final preseason contest when they host the Chicago Bears at Arrowhead Stadium on August 22.

Either way, fans shouldn’t expect Mahomes to play a full game in the preseason as Coach Reid looks to keep his 29-year-old quarterback fresh and injury-free heading into the new season.
