Former Warriors guard says Kevin Durant accidentally won Finals MVP in 2018

Former Golden State Warriors guard and two-time NBA champion Quinn Cook said Kevin Durant wanted Stephen Curry to win the 2018 Finals MVP but accidentally outplayed him due to the circumstances.

Kevin Durant’s stint with the Golden State Warriors was marked by two NBA championships and two Finals MVPs for KD.

During that time, the face of the Warriors franchise, Stephen Curry, faced some criticism for not performing on the biggest stage and for not being the Warriors’ most impactful player during their Finals runs, as he didn’t win either MVP before Durant’s arrival. Those honors went to Andre Iguodala in 2015 and Kevin Durant in 2017.

Former Warriors player and two-time NBA champion Quinn Cook revealed that KD really wanted Steph to win the Finals MVP, but one off night by Steph and KD’s dominance in the series led to Durant taking the award again.

"Kevin (Durant) wanted Steph to get that Finals MVP the next year (2018) so bad," Cook said on the Players Choice podcast.

"Game 3 we were struggling, Steph was struggling, and Kevin just, like, accidentally walked into 40," Cook said. "He wasn’t even as aggressive, and he just accidentally got the Finals MVP back-to-back."

Despite not winning the NBA Finals MVP in his first three Finals wins, Curry finally captured his first MVP in 2022 during a legendary, legacy-defining series against the Boston Celtics.
