Report: What Southampton have now done after West Ham United sent £30m bid for Mateus Fernandes

Southampton ace Mateus Fernandes has been the subject of heavy transfer interest over the summer.

As is often the case with recently relegated teams, their better players are garnering attention from top-flight clubs.

Rising talent Tyler Dibling is linked with Everton and did not play any part for Southampton against Wrexham on Saturday.

Meanwhile, it was previously reported that Atletico Madrid were tracking Mateus Fernandes.

Now, Premier League side West Ham United have made a bid for the Saints star.

Southampton reject West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes bid and set valuation

It was previously said that Southampton had valued Fernandes at around £30m.

However, that figure was seemingly not enough for the Saints to part ways with the 21-year-old.

Sky Sports News has now reported on Tuesday afternoon that West Ham made a £30m bid for the Southampton man.

However, it’s claimed that the South Coast outfit have rejected the approach for the Portuguese star.

It’s understood that they do not want to sell Fernandes and will only do so if they receive an offer closer to £50m – a huge increase on the previous £30m figure mooted.

What has Will Still said about Mateus Fernandes leaving Southampton

Fernandes came off the bench and played a crucial role in the Saints mounting a late comeback to beat Wrexham 2-1 over the weekend.

Following that win, manager Will Still was asked about Fernandes, but remained rather coy on a potential transfer.

Still said: “He’s a good player, there’s definitely going to be interest there for him, there are other good players in the squad that there’s interest for.

“I think Matty (Fernandes) wasn’t quite ready to start, we had to bring him on in the game. Time will tell.”
