Al Horford remains unsigned and a free agent on the market, though all indications say the big man will likely sign with the Warriors. However, that’s not official yet as Golden State is at a standstill with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. It’s also not guaranteed that Horford will play in the NBA next year entering his age-39 season.
“Those around the league continue to ticket Horford to the Warriors when the free agency dust ultimately settles,” per ESPN’s Anthony Slater. “The Kuminga situation continues to hold up business for them, keeping Horford in a holding pattern. But Horford is comfortable waiting. Retirement remains on the table, sources said, though the Warriors appear to be operating as if he is a firm part of their plan next season.”
Horford just wrapped up his 18th season in the league, proving he can still be a contributor on a playoff squad. While he can’t soak up minutes like he did in his prime, he was an important piece for the Celtics over the past few seasons. The Warriors would get a boost from the big man’s production, no matter what that looks like. Still, retirement also wouldn’t be a surprise considering his stage in life.
Golden State has been in wait-and-see mode this offseason because of Kuminga. Restricted free agents around the league have been in limbo, which include the Bulls and Josh Giddey, along with the Nets and Cam Thomas. Without a resolution to the Kuminga saga, free agents like Horford haven’t been able to sign their deals yet.
Regardless, Horford likely won’t be back with the Celtics. Boston has operated as if it won’t get back its longtime veteran who was a key piece of the 2024 NBA title squad. Once Jayson Tatum went down with his Achilles injury, that changed the equation considering Horford only has so many years left in his career. So it appears Horford will join a veteran Warriors squad hoping to make one last playoff push with guys like Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green.
