Report: Man Utd want 'world-class' £180,000-a-week Champions League star alongside Donnarumma

Manchester United are considering a surprise move to sign Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano, journalist Steve Kay has claimed.

The Old Trafford side are reportedly looking to bring in a new centre-back before the September 1 transfer deadline and have identified Upamecano as one of the available options.

The France international has less than a year left on his contract with the German champions and Bayern are risking losing him for free next year if he is not sold before then.

Upamecano, who joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021, had been a regular under Vincent Kompany in 2024/25 before an injury ended his season prematurely in March.

The 26-year-old returned to action at the Club World Cup, where he featured in each of Bayern’s five games, including starting in the 2-0 quarter-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Man United are anticipating a busy end to the summer transfer window, as a new goalkeeper and central midfielder appear to be top of Ruben Amorim’s agenda at the moment.

The Red Devils have so far splashed out heavily on forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko and are expected to strengthen other areas of the squad before the market deadline.

While Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been mentioned as a potential option in the goalkeeping department, Brighton starlet Carlos Baleba has been discussed as a midfield reinforcement, with talks on the player's side ongoing.

A move for Upamecano, meanwhile, would bring significant experience to Man United’s youthful backline, as the £180,000-a-week ace has well over 200 career appearances in the Bundesliga.

The ‘world-class’ defender helped Bayern reclaim the German title last term, his third whilst at the club, and also has two German Supercup wins under his belt.

If he were to complete a move to Old Trafford, Upamecano would reunite with his former Bayern teammates Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt, both of whom joined the Red Devils last summer.
