Isaac Schmidt’s imminent move away from Leeds United now looks as though it could be about to come under threat.

The 25-year-old only joined the Whites from Swiss outfit St Gallen last summer, but he has already seemed destined to be heading for the exit after failing to start a single Championship game last term.

Both Leeds and Schmidt have already agreed terms for a loan move to Werder Bremen, but the deal will not go through until a replacement can be sourced.

Daniel Farke’s side have had difficulties in securing a new right-back, and it looks as though those struggles could now be about to put the entire agreement under threat.

Werder Bremen want Schmidt decision in days as patience tested

Leeds have got their eyes on Leicester City’s James Justin, which could potentially free up Schmidt to make his switch to the Bundesliga.

However, the Whites’ interest in Justin is yet to be materialised, which would suggest that any potential deal remains a fair distance away from completion.

Leeds’ inability to land a new right-back has totally stalled the deal

The situation regarding Schmidt now appears to be coming to a head, as the delay from the West Yorkshire outfit is thought to be putting Bremen’s “patience to the test,” according to Deich Stube.

The German side are still awaiting the green light to finalise the deal, but they are now understood to be pushing for Leeds to make a final decision “in the coming days.”

Bremen get their campaign underway on Friday evening, which has added a renewed sense of urgency at their end, and as a result, they are now also exploring possible alternatives.

Leeds should allow Schmidt exit regardless of incomings

Schmidt struggled in Leeds’ recent friendly with AC Milan, and that display further reinforced the idea that he isn’t ready for Premier League football.

The desire to secure a replacement on the right side of the backline is totally understandable, but it makes little sense for Schmidt’s move to be stalled in the meantime.

The fact that the Swiss international failed to start a single league game last term says a lot about the level of confidence that Farke has in him, and it’s clear that he will be surplus to requirements this term, regardless of any potential incoming.

With that in mind, it surely makes sense for Leeds to sanction his departure as quickly as they can, to ensure they avoid the eventuality of potentially being stuck with Schmidt once they get a new man through the door.
