The Celtics will have a new lead governor in William Chisholm when the first part of the team’s sale to Chisholm’s group becomes official later this month. Current governor Wyc Grousbeck will remain as team CEO and become alternate governor once the sale is complete, according to a league source.

Grousbeck was originally expected to maintain the lead governor role until the completion of the $6.1 billion sale in 2027-28 but those plans have been amended. One league source described the relationship between Grousbeck and the new ownership group as “harmonious” to this point.

The Celtics are in the midst of a major offseason of change coming off a second-round upset loss to the Knicks in the NBA Playoffs that included an Achilles tear for Jayson Tatum. A historic luxury tax bill has led to the departure of four rotation players for Boston amid cost-cutting to dodge CBA penalties and potentially begin to reset the team’s repeater tax this season.

A league source tells MassLive the ownership change is expected to become official later this month after approval by the NBA board of governors.
