The 2025/26 Premier League season kicks off in style this Sunday, August 17, as Manchester United host Arsenal in a highly anticipated clash between two of England’s most storied clubs.

Arsenal arrive in Manchester riding the momentum of an unbeaten pre-season and buoyed by big-money summer arrivals, including Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres and Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi. After finishing runners-up last season, Mikel Arteta’s side are determined to mount another title challenge and dethrone reigning champions Manchester City.

United, meanwhile, are aiming to bounce back from a disappointing 15th-placed finish in 2024/25. Under manager Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils have strengthened their attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and former Arsenal target Benjamin Sesko, though defensive frailties remain a concern following a 1-0 pre-season defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

The Old Trafford atmosphere is set to be electric, with the club introducing a new “pop-up pub” inside the stadium complex, offering free entry, local beers from Shindigger, and street food from Yard and Coop to draw fans in early.

Arsenal hold the edge in recent meetings, unbeaten in their last five league encounters with United. Former Gunners forward Theo Walcott has tipped his old side to extend that run, predicting a 1-0 away win sealed by a Gabriel Martinelli counter-attack.

“I think they’ll dominate possession, catch United on the break, and keep it tight at the back,” Walcott said on the It’s Called Soccer! podcast.

Arteta boasts a strong record against United since taking charge, although last season’s FA Cup defeat, despite the Red Devils being reduced to 10 men, remains a blemish. With Gyokeres now spearheading the attack, Arsenal will hope to convert dominance into points in what promises to be a statement start to their campaign.

Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30pm, with both sides eager to set the tone for the season ahead.
