Newcastle United confirm departure of £20m player on season-long loan

· 12 August 2025, 19:30

**Newcastle United fans are waiting for the official announcement on the arrival of German international centre-back Malick Thiaw.**

In the meantime, the club has reported on some transfer activity, confirming the outgoing of Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos on a season-long loan to La Liga side Sevilla.

It was reported yesterday that the 31-year-old was heading to Spain for a medical ahead of a move.

At around 5:30pm, Newcastle United confirmed via X that Vlachodimos has now signed for Sevilla for the season.

Sevilla have signed Odysseas Vlachodimos on a season-long loan deal

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Odysseas Vlachodimos arrived at Newcastle United early in the summer window last year as part of a quasi-swap deal with Nottingham Forest as both clubs looked to comply with PSR.

While Nottingham Forest got Elliot Anderson for £35 million, Newcastle forked out a whopping £20 million for Vlachodimos despite having no interest in the player.

The Greece star made just one appearance for the Magpies in 12 months as the reality of the move became very clear. If it wasn't for the PSR trouble the Magpies were in, there's no way they'd have taken Ody as part of the deal with Forest.

Can Odysseas Vlachodimos earn himself a permanent move?

-------------------------------------------------------

Despite never playing for Newcastle, he kept his spot as Greece's first-choice stopper and was in the team that became the first-ever Greece side to beat England in October last year.

He actually looked pretty decent in that game, which makes his exclusion from Eddie Howe's plans even more baffling, as he's clearly a capable goalkeeper.

Regardless, he's now got a season to try and earn a permanent move to Sevilla. But thanks to the fee Newcastle paid for him, they will want a hefty return on their investment next year which could put the Spanish side off a permanent move. We'll just have to check in and see how it goes in 12 months.
