Newcastle United have been linked with a move for FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa this summer as a possible replacement for Alexander Isak.
With the Sweden international still refusing to return to first-team training, Eddie Howe’s recruitment team must now look at alternatives if Alexander Isak does leave Newcastle United this summer.
While Yoane Wissa is expected to join Newcastle, he is recognised as a replacement for Callum Wilson, rather than Isak. Howe wants a talented young striker to take Isak’s role.
The search has led them to Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, who was sensational in Liga Portugal last season, scoring 19 goals in a campaign overshadowed by Viktor Gyokores’ brilliance.
Newcastle fans urged Howe to sign Aghehowa, with many believing he is a great replacement for Isak, but it remains to be seen whether a deal will be pursued with the player holding a release clause above £80million.
With Newcastle still looking for a striker, Aghehowa made a telling move amid the speculation around his future.

Samu Aghehowa’s telling celebration amid Newcastle United interest
As well as in the league, Aghehowa was a bright spark during Porto’s 2024/25 Europa League campaign, scoring 6 goals in nine games.
Newcastle made an informal enquiry for Aghehowa earlier this summer, but the belief is they are not willing to pay such a high transfer fee for the youngster. However, it looks like the Magpies never stood a chance of signing him after his celebration during Porto’s 3-0 win against Vitoria SC on Monday evening.

The 21-year-old scored a brace for the Portuguese giants, celebrating by kissing the Porto badge and pointing to the ground, a sign that he is more than happy to stay at his current club.
Aghehowa’s brace is a sign of what he can achieve in football. He could make the league his own, especially with Gyokores now gone.
Newcastle United must look elsewhere after Samu Aghehowa’s celebration
It was always difficult to see Newcastle striking a deal for Aghehowa, especially after learning his price tag. Work now has to be done to find an alternative, and it must be completed quickly with the transfer window closing in less than three weeks.
There was a lot of hope that Benjamin Sesko was going to sign for Newcastle, with the player verbally agreeing to join and a large offer being submitted. Sadly, the 22-year-old opted for Manchester United, who offered less than the Magpies.
Newcastle are interested in signing Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea, with reports suggesting the 24-year-old could cost as little as £50million this summer.
Elsewhere, reports have stated that Wolves’ Jurgen Strand Larsen is on Newcastle’s radar, even though he just completed a permanent move to the Midlands side this summer.
The pressure is building on Newcastle to make the most out of the transfer window, one that had a lot of promise before it opened.
