Practice Report (8/12): Notes from the sideline

* The defensive front caused some havoc during team drills between the Jets offense and the Giants defense. On a play where it appeared the Jets completed a long pass down the field, which brought cheers from the crowd, it looked like Abdul Carter would have taken the quarterback down before the pass was thrown. Later in that first team period, the defense forced two scrambles from the quarterback thanks to strong coverage and team pass pressure.

* In the next team period, Micah McFadden had a tackle for loss on a run play one rep before Brian Burns exploded around the edge for what would have been a sack. Two plays later, Elijah Chatman got into the backfield on a run play that would have been a tackle for loss. Two reps after that, K.J. Cloyd chased the Jets quarterback out of the pocket for what might have been another sack. In the final team period, Dexter Lawrence had a pressure, and McFadden combined with Darius Alexander for what would have likely been a sack.

* The first team defense allowed only one touchdown in their red zone action to close practice, with one of the plays featuring a pressure from Darius Alexander. Dane Belton had a tackle for loss, playing a quick pass to the right sideline well to make the play with the second group. TJ Moore had a nice blitz from the slot on one play, but the Jets got into the end zone a few times against the second group, with a couple of penalties called in the defensive backfield during the period.

* The offense got off to a slow start during team drills, with some sloppiness, incomplete passes and a lot of penetration into the backfield. But they turned it around during red zone work at the end of practice. The first team offense finished its period with three touchdowns. The first was a Russell Wilson slant to Theo Johnson over the middle and the second came on a Devin Singletary run where he was untouched into the end zone. The final score came on a Wilson throw to Darius Slayton toward the sideline in some traffic on the right side of the end zone.

* The second team offense scored on their final red zone play as Jaxson Dart threw what has become a patented back-shoulder throw to Zack Pascal along the left sideline. Pascal tapped his feet inbounds for the score.

* The two teams are back to work tomorrow at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford New Jersey.
