Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, has issued a statement on his future after being left out of Luis Enrique’s squad for the UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham on Wednesday.
The Italy international has one year remaining on his contract at the Parc des Princes and has been tipped to leave the club this summer. PSG have already signed Lucas Chevalier from Ligue 1 rivals Lille, and the Frenchman is expected to assume the starting role for the new season.
United are among several European clubs to have been linked with the 26-year-old, as doubts continue to grow over his future at PSG. However, a recent report from the Daily Mail suggests that a goalkeeper is not currently a priority for the Manchester club, and talk of interest in the PSG outcast has been played down.
That said, Donnarumma’s future in the French capital appears untenable, and his recent statement reads like a farewell to the club and its supporters, strongly suggesting that the decision to leave may not have been his own. "To the special Paris fans," he wrote.
"From the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain. Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.
"I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it.
"I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home. To my teammates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers.
"Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris."
