Luis Enrique axes Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG squad, Man Utd target faces same fate as David de Gea

The future of Manchester United transfer target Gianluigi Donnarumma is up in the air following a statement and some brutal comments from Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique.

After winning the Champions League at Paris Saint-Germain, Gianluigi Donnarumma is about to be shown the door in the French capital, amid speculation he could be on his way to the Premier League following talks with Man City.

Donnarumma has long been recognised as one of the leading goalkeepers in Europe, especially after improving at PSG following an impressive stint as AC Milan’s first-choice stopper.

The Italian keeper has been linked with moves to Chelsea and United this summer, with Ruben Amorim understood to be in the market for a stopper to compete with Andre Onana at Old Trafford.

PSG no longer consider Donnarumma to be the first-choice keeper following the signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille. He is in the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes, and negotiations over a new deal have stalled.

Luis Enrique confirms stance on Gianluigi Donnarumma

Donnarumma’s situation in Paris worsened this week when he was left out of the squad for the 2025 Super Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur.

This only raised further questions about Donnarumma’s long-term future.

Donnarumma is available for £26m according to reports, which appears a good deal for an experienced keeper still yet to hit his prime. The two stumbling blocks United face are his £200,000-per-week salary and the need to sell players first.

Speaking on Tuesday, a day before the Super Cup final, Enrique explained his decision.

“Donnarumma is out of the squad as it’s my own decision,” Enrique said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano. “I am 100% responsible.

“I want a different kind of goalkeeper and I made this decision. Gigio is one of the best goalkeepers in the whole world.”

It didn’t take Donnarumma long to clarify his position, taking to social media to write an emotional statement to PSG fans.

Donnarumma faces same fate as David de Gea

Back in 2022, David de Gea was snubbed in favour of Unai Simon, David Raya and Robert Sanchez in Enrique’s Spain squad.

Enrique pulled no punches when explaining his decision to omit De Gea from his Spain squad, stating that “a goalkeeper should start the player and dominate aerially”.

This was the beginning of the end of De Gea’s time in the national team.

He eventually left Old Trafford and was replaced by Onana.
