Detroit Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham is one of the most talked-about stars in the NBA. He might get a big opportunity soon.
The Detroit Pistons had a tremendous 2024-25 season and one that laded them an appearance in the playoffs. While making the playoffs might be a given for some franchises, it meant so much to the Pistons, because they were coming off a season when they only won 14 games, during their 2023-24 campaign.
It’s really an exciting time to be a Detroit Pistons fan. The future is looking bright, and one of the reasons is because of star point guard Cade Cunningham. The Pistons drafted Cunningham as the No. 1 overall pick during the 2021 draft, and after some seasons with injuries, he was healthy and delivered during the 2024-25 season. He seems to be the perfect fit with head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who will be entering his second seasons coaching the team.
Now, Cunningham is making waves in the NBA. To say that he’s getting respect doesn’t fully tell the story. He’s getting more than respect in the NBA, he’s starting to get feared by other teams. Looking ahead, one NFL analyst is predicting a huge opportunity for Cunningham in the future.

Cunningham hasn’t had the chance to be on the USA Olympic team yet, but it’s a good possibility that he will in 2028. In a feature published on Thursday, August 7, Colin Ward-Henninger predicts who will make the 2028 Olympics team, and he has Cunningham as a shoo-in.
In the piece, Ward-Henninger says that Cunningham is going to be scary-good in the next few years.
“A 6-foot-6 point guard with size and strength, Cunningham is just tapping the surface of his potential,” he notes. “It’s scary to imagine how good he could be in three years, when he’ll be hard to pass up for an Olympic roster spot.”
He adds that Cunningham’s “ability to play on or off the ball will be key, as will his ability to set up teammates in addition to looking for his own offense. Cunningham won gold with Team USA at the U19 FIBA World Cup, and 2028 seems like the right time for him to step onto the Olympic stage.”
Cade Cunningham is the No. 4 Guard in the NBA
So, how does Cunningham stand up against other guards in the NBA? In a feature published on Monday, Aug. 4, Frank Urbina ranks all of the guards in the NBA and names the best. Cunningham has a great spot on his tally.
He has Cunningham at No. 4, just behind Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks. Cunningham’s salary for the 2025-26 season is $46,394,100, making him 16th overall.
“Cunningham just enjoyed easily the best season of his career, leading Detroit to a 44-38 regular season and to within two games of the second round of the playoffs, no small accomplishment considering how abysmal the team was just a few years ago,” Urbina notes in the piece.
It’s so great to see Cunningham getting all of this press. The next few years will be exciting for this Pistons favorite.
