Alexander Isak has been Liverpool’s number one target for as long as many can remember.
In fact, ever since the summer transfer window opened at the start of June, it’s felt like Isak’s move to Anfield was edging ever closer.
Indeed, the Reds’ initial bid of £110 million was instantly rebuffed by Newcastle, which ultimately led them to spend over £70 million on Hugo Ekitike.

However, now that the former Real Sociedad man is refusing to play for the Magpies ever again, a move seems increasingly likely.
Newcastle have entered the race for Jean-Philippe Mateta
One of the main problems behind Isak joining Liverpool is that Eddie Howe hasn’t been able to sign a suitable replacement for the Sweden international.
Joao Pedro, Benjamin Sesko, and Ekitike have all chosen to join other teams than Newcastle, which has left the club in a bit of a pickle.
Now, however, as per a report from journalist Rudy Galetti via his personal X account, it seems like Howe has set his sights on yet another number nine.
“Newcastle have identified Jean-Philippe Mateta as a top target should Alexander Isak depart,” he wrote.

Alexander Isak wants to sign for Liverpool
If it isn’t already abundantly clear, it’s evident that Isak wants to become a Liverpool player.
The striker has been the Anfield outfit’s number one target for some time now, and even though Ekitike made a more than solid name for himself during the Community Shield defeat against Crystal Palace on Sunday, another attacking option would be useful.
Indeed, the Frenchman would be better in his natural position of striker, but with the way he plays, he could become fairly effective as a left-winger.
It’s been shared that Arne Slot is happier with his team this year than his first-team squad from last season, which means that plenty more rotation will likely be occurring.
Of course, these are all just ifs, buts and maybes at the moment, but for now, a move for Isak feels like a fairly logical move, especially if Mateta is on Newcastle’s radar.
