'Miss you' - Bruno Guimaraes sends message to Newcastle United player as exit agreed

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has reacted to the club’s latest transfer business.

Guimaraes led Newcastle to Carabao Cup success and Champions League qualification in his first season as captain of the club in 2024/25.

Now, as the club prepares for a new season back in the Champions League, transfer business is starting to pick up.

Newcastle have now made three senior signings with more set to follow, while exits are also being agreed.

Bruno Guimaraes reacts as Newcastle United transfer confirmed

Late on Tuesday night, Newcastle confirmed the signing of centre-back Malick Thiaw from AC Milan on a four-year contract. The deal is worth up to £34.3million, including add-ons.

Thiaw follows Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale through the door this summer as Newcastle’s third major summer signing.

Following confirmation of Thiaw’s arrival, Newcastle took to Instagram to post an image of the German defender along with the caption: “A new local is in town. We are delighted to announce the signing of defender Malick Thiaw on a long-term deal from Italian side AC Milan.”

The post was shared by Guimaraes on his personal Instagram account, with the Brazilian stating: “Welcome bro @Malick.Laye.”

Thiaw will wear the No. 12 shirt at Newcastle and is set to be included in the matchday squad for Saturday’s season opener at Aston Villa (12:30pm kick-off).

Upon joining Newcastle, Thiaw told the club website: “I’m really excited to join this massive club. I can’t wait to start training and to get to know my new teammates and all the staff.

“The gaffer showed me his vision and what he wants to do with me as a player and the club itself, which is really exciting.

“I think Newcastle speaks for itself. It’s a great club, a big club with passionate fans who I can’t wait to see at St. James’ Park.”

Newcastle United transfer exit confirmed

Hours before the announcement of Thiaw’s arrival, Newcastle confirmed a low-key departure from their squad as Odysseas Vlachodimos left to join La Liga side Sevilla on loan for the 2025/26 season.

The Greek international goalkeeper joined Newcastle for £20million from Nottingham Forest last summer. Although The Magpies’ record goalkeeper signing, the transfer was dubbed a ‘PSR swap’ with Elliot Anderson heading in the opposite direction for £35million in a move that helped both clubs comply with the Premier League’s financial rules.

But with Vlachadimos a PSR pawn, his chances of making his move to Newcastle a success were slim as he was limited to just one substitute appearance in the Carabao Cup last season. The 31-year-old rarely made the bench but was still able to make an impression on his teammates behind the scenes.

And Guimaraes was one of the first Newcastle players to wish Vlachodimos well in his new venture as he shared Sevilla’s announcement video on Instagram along with the caption: “Good luck bro, I will miss you @Vlachod1mos. Malaka.”

‘Malaka’, in this context, is a term of endearment in Greek slang, though its direct translation could be considered quite offensive.
