Newcastle United are pushing to secure at least one more new signing before the Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday.
The Magpies hope Jacob Ramsey will be eligible to make his debut against his former club after last night moving closer to finalising an £40million agreement with Villa.
Eddie Howe’s side have been in the market for a central midfielder after selling Sean Longstaff to Leeds United for £15million, with Ramsey’s imminent arrival taking the number of midfielders back up to six.
With Howe operating with a three-man midfield, it gives the head coach the option to fully rotate his pack, which will be crucial with domestic and European football to contend with.

Earlier this week, Newcastle were said to be considering activating the £30m release clause of Leicester City’s Bilal Khannouss, however that is unlikely with Ramsey Howe’s preferred option.
Newcastle United pushing to sign Brentford’s Yoane Wissa
NewcastleWorld can also reveal that a deal for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa is also edging closer.
The pursuit of the Wissa has been a protracted affair, but with progress made on a Bees replacement, Wissa is finally set to get the green light to sign for the Magpies. And there is hope progress can be made on this deal, as well as Ramsey, in time for the weekend.
Getting one, or both, into the ranks for the weekend would go some way to making up for the continued absence of Alexander Isak, who is refusing to play in an attempt to force through a move to Liverpool.
On Tuesday evening, the Magpies announced the signing of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, with the German defender understood to have cost £35m. It follows on from the £55m arrival of Anthony Elanga and the loan signing of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
