Former Arsenal centre-back Philippe Senderos believes Manchester United should consider swooping for Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

With just under three weeks of the summer transfer window remaining, United remain open to the possibility of signing a goalkeeper ahead of the September 1 deadline.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News back in January, head coach Ruben Amorim wants to sign a goalkeeper that can challenge and compete with Andre Onana for the No.1 spot.

The Cameroonian, who played no part in United's pre-season campaign because of a hamstring injury, was guilty of committing one too many high profile mistakes last season, leading to questions being asked of his suitability to remain United's first-choice goalkeeper.

Onana reported back for the start of pre-season training last month under the impression he will remain top of the pecking order. He also has no interest in leaving the club despite reports linking him with AS Monaco earlier this summer.

Despite that, former Gunners defender Senderos believes fellow countryman Sommer, 36, would add some much-needed experience to Amorim's team.

"I think Yann Sommer is a very, very experienced player and a calming presence," Senderos told BoyleSports, who provide Premier League odds. "He makes the defence better because of that presence.

"I can't really judge Andre Onana in this situation, but if United were to target Yann Sommer, I'd really believe he'd add invaluable experience.

"It's about how he is as a person, how he is on the pitch. He's a great character and amazing in what he brings to a defence. We've seen it with Inter Milan and Bayern Munich the year before."

Sommer, who will turn 37 in December, joined Inter in August 2023, replacing Onana after he had moved to Old Trafford a few weeks earlier.

The goalkeeper, who announced his retirement from international football last year, played 53 times for Inter last season, keeping 22 clean sheets. He also started all but one game of their run to the Champions League final.
