'I can confirm': Fabrizio Romano says Pep Guardiola is repeatedly telling Man City to sign 'underrated' player

Manchester City have signed six new players already this summer, and there could be more.

Pep Guardiola has had immense success in the Premier League over the years, but his side looked nothing like their usual selves last season.

The Spaniard will want to get back to competing for the Premier League and Champions League titles in the upcoming campaign, and his team is already looking stronger.

Now, if Guardiola gets his wish, Manchester City could sign a superstar.

Fabrizio Romano shares Rodrygo Goes to Manchester City update

Rodrygo Goes will be one of the names who will dominate the headlines in the coming weeks.

The Brazilian has been a key player for Real Madrid for many years, but as we saw during the Club World Cup, he is not on top of Xabi Alonso’s pecking order.

TBR Football exclusively revealed on Tuesday that Real Madrid have informed Rodrygo that they will listen to offers for him, and Manchester City are among the clubs interested in his services.

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that during transfer discussions behind the scenes at Manchester City, Guardiola is personally pushing his club to sign Rodrygo.

But, this move will not happen until two current City players leave the club.

Romano said in a video on his YouTube channel: “I also wanted to add something about Rodrygo. I keep telling you that Pep Guardiola is pushing to have Rodrygo at Manchester City.

“Pep, in conversations at Manchester City, keeps insisting on Rodrygo as a target. But the Rodrygo deal can only happen if Savinho goes to Tottenham. And at the moment, there is still no agreement between Tottenham and Manchester City. So let’s see what’s going to happen with the Savinho story. Let’s see what’s going to happen with the Rodrygo story.

“I can confirm 100 per cent that City’s interest is genuine, but this deal can only happen with the outgoings of McAtee – Nottingham Forest still waiting to finalise – and then especially Savinho to Tottenham.

“These are the two deals needed for Manchester City to raise the money, not have any problem with financial fair play, and reinvest on Rodrygo, a player they want internally. A player super appreciated by Pep Guardiola.”

Savinho vs Rodrygo stats compared in 2024/25

Savinho is an incredibly talented player; there is no debate there.

The Brazilian has done a good job for Manchester City out wide, and Guardiola definitely rates his ability and potential.

However, Rodrygo, who has been hailed as ‘underrated’ by Jude Bellingham, would be a serious upgrade on Savinho.

Games Goals Assists

Savinho in 2024/25 48 3 13

Rodrygo in 2024/25 54 14 11

Rodrygo’s 25 direct goal contributions trump Savinho’s 16, and the fact that the Real Madrid man is far more experienced despite still being just 24 makes him a much better option.

Guardiola is right to be insisting on Rodrygo behind the scenes at Manchester City, but only time will tell if they will be able to get him before the window shuts.
