Newcastle United official in Portugal as €60-65m offer suggested

Over the past few days, FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa has been pushed forward as an option for Newcastle United. Since then, the Portuguese media have presented their takes on this case.

Four days ago, O Jogo said Newcastle haven’t made an approach to the Dragons, but it’s not impossible for them to make advances to sign the striker.

He scored a brace in the league opener against Vitória Guimarães and while celebrating one of his goals, Aghehowa pointed to Porto’s badge and was seen saying “I’m staying.” This was taken as a clear message to Newcastle and other clubs.

Wednesday’s edition of Jornal de Notícias indicates the Magpies haven’t been put off. It’s claimed they are the team to have shown most interest in the 21-year-old and sent an official to watch him live against Vitória Guimarães.

The Newcastle representative was pleased with Aghehowa’s performance. Despite this and their strong interest, the newspaper says they haven’t tabled a bid yet.

Jornal de Notícias reports Eddie Howe’s side could offer around €60-65m plus bonuses to Porto. This may not be enough considering the frontman has a €100m release clause.

Over at A Bola, they report Newcastle’s interest ‘hasn’t shaken’ Aghehowa, who is happy with his life at Porto.

They point out his celebration against Vitória Guimarães, seen as a clear wish to stay in Portugal for at least for one more season. This is mainly to fulfil his desire to help Porto win the title this season.

A Bola states: ‘The 21-year-old decided early on that his immediate future would lie with the Dragon, although he is aware that the market is volatile and that an offer close to the amount stipulated in the release clause, €100m, could result in other types of moves.’

This indicates there may be developments if Newcastle decide to tempt Porto with a bid, and until that happens, Aghehowa is set to stay where he is.
