Newcastle United are pushing to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey after positive talks between the clubs in recent days.

The Magpies have long pursued the versatile 24-year-old, who would add much-needed depth to Eddie Howe’s midfield and attacking departments after a testing summer transfer window to date.

Newcastle are poised to pay £40m for Ramsey's signature, with personal terms unlikely to be an issue.

The ex-England U21 star is set to talk with Aston Villa chiefs before making a final decision but belief is growing that an agreement could be reached in the coming days.

Ramsey has two years left to run on his Villa Park deal but the stance in the Midlands is that a sale would greatly benefit Unai Emery's side in their battle against PSR.

Villa recently completed a deal to sell their women's team to V Sports, their parent company, in a bid to stave off financial concerns.

But Ramsey has long been linked with a move away for PSR reasons, despite featuring 29 times in the Premier League for Emery last season alone.

His Villa record reads as 17 goals in 167 appearances since his debut in the senior side five years ago.

Ramsey is shrewd ball dribbler, who has helped raise the game of team-mates around him, notably Morgan Rogers.

"He is in a wonderful place and will be a terrific player," former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard said of Ramsey.

"It won’t be long before the whole country is watching him I’m sure. He is right up there, let me tell you.”

Tuesday night brought confirmation Newcastle had wrapped up a deal for German defender Malick Thiaw, with the centre-back penning a long-term deal after leaving AC Milan.

With Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale also through the door, Newcastle's summer window is beginning to shape up after early misses in the market.

Alexander Isak's saga continues to linger but Howe is starting to build a deep squad capable of fighting on four fronts this term.
