Sunderland may have already been busy in the transfer window this summer but they have not finished yet and could be about to make a move which would bring Lloyd Kelly back to the north east in a surprise return.
According to Italian media outlet Gazetta dello Sport, Sunderland have made an enquiry to Juventus about signing Kelly and bringing him back to the Premier League. There was high hopes for Kelly at St James' Park when he arrived at Newcastle only a year ago after making a switch from previous club Bournemouth, where he had become a free agent.
High hopes were not realised however, and after just four appearances he was loaned out to Juventus in January on a deal that meant the moved would become permanent at the end of the season. Newcastle received around £15m for Kelly, but now he could be returning to England for a higher price despite struggling in Serie A.
Kelly appeared for Juve in the Club World Cup this summer, but is understood to not be a key figure in the Italian giants' plans, despite the recent deal. With Juve welcoming of a cash injection to aid their PSR position, selling the defender would aid the club's cause.
Sunderland are aware of that and are said to have made contact about a potential deal, although reports suggest Juve want close to £17m for Kelly, which would represent a profit for them. Sunderland have already strengthened in defence with the arrival of Omar Alderete from Getafe and Renildo Mandava from Atletico Madrid, but would still welcome someone with Kelly's Premier League and now, Champions League experience.
