Carlo Ancelotti verdict should excite Leeds United amid shock transfer raid

Leeds United have reportedly agreed a deal to sign free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The striker has been without a club since leaving Everton at the end of June following the expiry of his contract.

A report in The Athletic says Calvert-Lewin is set to undergo a medical at the Whites' Thorp Arch training ground imminently, with a view to completing the move. Barring any late issues, the former England international looks set to become United's eighth summer signing.

Calvert-Lewin spent nine years at the Merseyside club after joining from Sheffield United in 2016, hitting 71 goals in 274 appearances. Injury problems hampered his Toffees spell. Although the 28-year-old was offered a new Everton deal last summer, no agreement materialised.

Calvert-Lewin has reportedly held talks with United, Manchester United and Newcastle United in recent weeks. Given Calvert-Lewin's injury troubles, many Whites fans will be left feeling underwhelmed by the potential deal.

Calvert-Lewin has struggled to hit the heights he reached under Carlo Ancelotti's management at Everton in the 2020/21 season. His eye-catching form saw him named in England's squad for the European Championships. That year, Calvert-Lewin scored 21 goals across all competitions.

Ancelotti, now the head coach of the Brazil national team, transformed Calvert-Lewin's fortunes and told the press he believed Calvert-Lewin was a "complete striker". "He is a complete striker. It is not easy to find a striker with these characteristics," said Ancelotti when Calvert-Lewin earned his first call-up to the England national team in October 2020.

"He has a lot of energy, is really fast. I am really pleased he is doing well and scoring goals because at the end a striker is judged on the goals he scores. It's a great achievement for him [the England call-up]. I hope it will not be the last. It depends on him. He is doing really well. He needs to have consistency."

Calvert-Lewin made 26 Premier League appearances for Everton last term, finding the back of the net on just three occasions. His last goal came in a thrilling 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur back in January.
